Once Maharaj Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya Yagna and the Yagna Mandap was constructed in a very beautiful and amazing way. In that pavilion, instead of water, there used to be confusion of water instead of place. Seeing a place from this, Duryodhana fell into the water reservoir. Draupadi ridiculed him and said that the child of the blind is also blind. Duryodhana was greatly hurt by this bitter word and to avenge this insult, he called Yudhishthira to gamble and won by deceit and gave the Pandavas twelve years of exile.
While living in the forest, he had to endure many sufferings. One day Lord Krishna came to meet Yudhishthira in the forest. Yudhishthira told him everything and asked him the way to get out of this disaster. On this, Lord Krishna asked him to fast on Anant Chaturdashi and said that by doing this, you will get the lost kingdom. After this conversation, Shri Krishna narrates a story to Yudhishthira.
There was a Brahmin in ancient times, he had a daughter named Susheela. When the girl grew up, the Brahmin married her to Kaundinay Rishi. After marriage, Kaundinay Rishi went towards his ashram. It was night on the way that he started to dusk along the river. On Sushila's asking, she told the importance of eternal fast. Susheela tied the 14-knot thread in her hand by performing the fasting ritual there. Then she came to her husband. When the Kondinya Rishi asked about the thread tied in Sushila's hand, Sushila told the whole thing. Kaundinaya became unhappy with the sage Sushila's talk. He also put the string in his hand to fire. This led to insult to the eternal God, as a result of which all the wealth of Kaundinya Rishi was destroyed. Sushila explained the reason for burning the door in the fire.
Burning in the fire of repentance, the sage went towards the forest in search of the eternal God. While wandering, they fell down frustrated and fainted. Lord Anant appeared to him and said that because of my humiliation, this condition of yours happened and plagues came. But I am happy with you now because of your repentance. Go to your ashram and do this fast for me for 14 years by law. This will remove all your troubles. The sage Kaundinaya did the same and all his sufferings were overcome and he also attained salvation.
Yudhishthira also gave a fast to the eternal God by the order of Sri Krishna, which won the Pandavas in the war of Mahabharata.
Benefits of Anant Chaturdashi fast
On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, turmeric yellowing with 14 knots and tying it in the right arm gives eternal fruit because these 14 knots contain fourteen worlds in which Lord Vishnu resides.
