Trend Speaks

Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of Shravan (August) according to the Hindu calendar. It's the day when brothers and sisters reaffirm their affectionate bond. It is typically a Hindu festival but nowadays people from different faiths celebrate it too. On this day, Sisters tie a sacred threads or a colorful special band, rightly called the 'Rakhi' on their brothers' wrist as a mark of affection, sisterly love and sublime sentiments. The brothers in return promise to protect their sisters and offer them gifts.

'Raksha' means protection and 'Bandhan' means binding or bound. The prosperous Indian mythology provides many religious reasons to celebrate the day. The festival is mentioned in most of the Indian epics and its origin can be traced back to the mythological times. The practice of tying thread was traditionally prevalent in the Indian history.

The festival is celebrated in different forms in different areas and is also known by different names. As per traditions, on this day the sister prepares the Puja Thali with a Diya, Rice, Roli and Rakhis. She worships the Gods, ties Rakhi to her brother and prays for his well-being. In return the brother accepts the love with a promise to protect her sister and gives her a gift. Traditionally, they then share and eat sweets like Kaju Katli, Jalebi, and Burfi. This festival strengthens the bond of love between the sisters and brothers.

The USGS initially calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.5, but later downgraded it to 7.2. It said the quake was centred 22 miles (36 kilometres) northwest of the town of Tecpan de Galeana, and was 15 miles (24 kilometres) deep.

In many cases of earthquakes in Mexico, it can take time to receive word from remote areas near the epicenter, where damage could be more extensive. There were no early reports of serious damage or injuries near the epicenter in Tecpan de Galeana.

Friday's quake occurred along a section of the Pacific Coast known as the Guerrero Seismic Gap, a 125-mile (200-kilometre) section where tectonic plates meet and have been locked, meaning huge amounts of energy are being stored up with potentially devastating effects, said USGS seismologist Gavin Hayes.

The last large quake that occurred along the section was a magnitude-7.6 temblor in 1911, Hayes said.

He said scientists will be watching the area more intensely because moderate quakes such as Friday's can destabilize the surrounding sections of seismic plate and increase the chance of a more powerful temblor.

The USGS says the Guerrero Gap has the potential to produce a quake as strong as magnitude 8.4, potentially much more powerful than the magnitude-8.1 quake that killed 9,500 people and devastated large sections of Mexico City in 1985. The 1985 quake was centred 250 miles (400 kilometres) from the capital on the Pacific Coast.

Mexico City itself is vulnerable even to distant earthquakes because much of it sits atop the muddy sediments of drained lake beds that quiver as quake waves hit.

Miriam Matz, 45, gathered her suitcases and her teenage daughter to temporarily move out the apartment in the Morelos housing towers in downtown Mexico City where she has lived for five years, after brickwork and concrete slabs fell off the side of the 15-story tower, and long snaking cracks appeared on some walls during Friday's earthquake.

The sidewalk in front of the building was littered with bits of brick, glass and smashed concrete, and the area was roped off with yellow police tape.

Authorities have not forced residents to evacuate, but Matz said she would leave for safety's sake.

"We are going to spend a night or two at my sister's house, in case there are any aftershocks," she said.

Karbonn Champions League (CL) T20 2013: All Teams and Squads

Karbonn Champions League 2013 is all set for its 5th edition which is to be played in India from September 17 to October 6.

Karbonn Champions League (CL) T20 2013: All Teams and Squads have been announced.

World’s top 12 T-20 players, who were in big demand by multiple teams as they play for all those teams in their respective tournaments.

Explaining the process to decide, which teams these players would represent, Karbonn CL T20 Governing Council member and Director of Legal and Business Affairs, Dean Kino, said:

“Players who were named by more than one team were asked to select which team they were going to play for. Teams were then allowed to replace any player that withdrew from their squad and elected to play for another side.

“CLT20 regulations state that when a player elects to play for their ‘away’ team, that team must pay the ‘home’ team $150,000 compensation per player. A ‘home’ team is classified as a team from the country a player is eligible to represent in international cricket.

“This payment is applicable for 10 of the 12 players that were eligible for more than one team. The exceptions are Kumar Sangakkara, who will be representing Kandurata Maroons, which is classified as his home team, and Thisara Perera, who qualified for the Brisbane Heat and Hyderabad Sunrisers, neither of which is classified as his home team.”

The players and their teams they have chosen to represent in bold below:

· Dwayne Bravo – Trinidad & Tobago/Chennai Super Kings*
· Kevon Cooper – Trinidad & Tobago/Rajasthan Royals*
· Nathan Coulter-Nile – Perth Scorchers/Mumbai Indians*

· Faf du Plesses – Titans/Chennai Super Kings*

The victim and her friend entered the mill compound from one of the two entry points. After entering the compound, the two started taking pictures of the deserted mill. Two of the five accused spotted them and approached the victim. They said that the compound was a restricted area and taking pictures required special permission. Some 1,800 Indians, want to settle down on the Red Planet permanently and several of them are from Bangalore, according to Aashima Dogra, spokesperson of the Netherlands-based Mars One, which is planning a one-way human mission to Mars in 2022.

Mars One, founded in 2011, is a not-for-profit organization which aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023. It intends to fund the Endeavour by televising every aspect of the mission, from launch to landing to living on Mars.

The number of Indians expressing a desire to make Mars their permanent home is rapidly increasing. Dogra told TOI that while on May 6 the Mars One website showed the Indian count at a mere five, the number has rocketed to nearly 1,800 over the last three months.

The team of settlers will be selected from applicants registered on the company's website, and a $7 fee is the only investment involved as of now. Anyone above 18 can apply. So far some 100,00 people have applied and 30,000 are from the US.

Amulya Nidhi Rastogi, a third-year mechanical engineering student of Maharishi Dayanand College, wasn't too distraught about the prospect of going without kin either. The 20-year-old, said, he "wanted to experience something beyond earth and I think Mars is the first step in this direction. I am confident of settling down on Mars permanently as I have the mental stability."

About being separated from the family — who are supporting his plan — he said, "I do not think that will be much of a problem because there will be facilities for video chatting. Yes, I agree it will be disturbing for a while, but I will get used to it."

Rastogi is confident about passing the isolation test, part of the selection process which consists of four rounds, the first of which will be completed by this year-end. The final will be in 2014.

Those selected will undergo eight years of intensive training.

The current plan envisages the start of crew training in 2015, launching of two rovers in 2018, followed by an all-cargo mission in 2020 and the first one-way human flight in 2022. Mars One is in the process of evaluating various rockets.

Their website claims that the company intends to provide settlers with water, food and oxygen by mining resources from Mars' soil and atmosphere and that all components required to complete the mission can currently be built by existing suppliers.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar presents a Rs3.5 trillion federal budget 2013-14 in a bid to revive the country’s ailing economy and is designed to achieve a 4.4% growth rate in the economy over the next fiscal year.

Fiscal deficit 6.3%; PSDP Rs1.155 trn; inflation 9.5%; revenue target set at Rs2.475 trn; defence allocation Rs 627 bn; Rs926 bn allocated for debt servicing; GST raised from 16 to 17 percent; Rs75 bn allocated for Income Support Programme; Pension up by 10%; minimum pension raised from Rs3000 to 5000; Rs225 bn for energy sector development.

This is the first federal budget presented during the tenure of newly-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his cabinet since the change of government following the 2013 general election.

The budget seeks to address the country’s energy crisis, reduce non-development expenditures and bring about a range of new economic policies of the elected government.

The government has termed the budget as “an investment and business friendly budget.

Finance Minister Dar said that a reduction in the electricity circular debt of over Rs500 billion was one of the main thrusts of the new budget. Simultaneously, the finance minister reiterated that an ambitious revenue collection target has been set for the forthcoming year to finance an economic revival in the country. He added that a 30% decrease in non-development expenditures was expected in the upcoming budget under austerity measures, and the reduction in expenditure would translate into relief for the common man.

One of the foremost challenges, which will define the future course of the government, is the large share of debt financing in the federal budget.

Similarly, large outlays in defence and subsidies (including those on energy), constitute a burden on the fiscal space available to the present government in the first federal budget of their five year term.

Last year alone, the budget head for subsidies was surpassed by an additional Rs450 billion in energy subsidies, compared to an original allocation of just Rs238 billion.
