Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of Shravan (August) according to the Hindu calendar. It's the day when brothers and sisters reaffirm their affectionate bond. It is typically a Hindu festival but nowadays people from different faiths celebrate it too. On this day, Sisters tie a sacred threads or a colorful special band, rightly called the 'Rakhi' on their brothers' wrist as a mark of affection, sisterly love and sublime sentiments. The brothers in return promise to protect their sisters and offer them gifts.

'Raksha' means protection and 'Bandhan' means binding or bound. The prosperous Indian mythology provides many religious reasons to celebrate the day. The festival is mentioned in most of the Indian epics and its origin can be traced back to the mythological times. The practice of tying thread was traditionally prevalent in the Indian history.

The festival is celebrated in different forms in different areas and is also known by different names. As per traditions, on this day the sister prepares the Puja Thali with a Diya, Rice, Roli and Rakhis. She worships the Gods, ties Rakhi to her brother and prays for his well-being. In return the brother accepts the love with a promise to protect her sister and gives her a gift. Traditionally, they then share and eat sweets like Kaju Katli, Jalebi, and Burfi. This festival strengthens the bond of love between the sisters and brothers.

In a cruel twist of fate, 22-year-old techie Swati, who reportedly was working for TCS, fell victim to the twin bomb blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati train just two months before she was to tie the nuptial knot.

Swati, an engineering graduate from a college in Hyderabad, had joined leading software firm TCS in Bangalore only four months ago and was returning home with a friend when the blasts claimed her.

When the news of Swati’s tragic death reached her family in Guntur, her parents and relatives were inconsolable.

“She was to come home today. But now only her body is coming”, Swati’s grief-stricken grandmother Rajalakshmi said.

“She was to marry in another two months,” a wailing Rajalakshmi said.

Fourteen persons were also injured in the bomb blasts that occurred in quick succession in the S4 and S5 coaches of the train as it arrived at the Chennai Central Railway station.

Chennai: Election authorities lodged a police complaint against five companies at an IT park here for functioning on the day of Lok Sabha polling in Tamil Nadu today in violation of rules and sent back around 2,000 employees home to enable them to vote.

Officials said they received complaints from employees of firms like Wipro in an IT park that they had been asked to report for duty despite the provision in law that employers and commercial establishments must grant holiday with wages for their employees on polling day.

“When we visited ELCOT IT Park at Sholinganallur, we found that Tech Mahindra, HCL, Sodexho, Wipro and Voltas were working as usual,” Sholinganallur Revenue Inspector R Jayanthi Mala told PTI, adding this was a violation of election rules.

Well in advance, the Government declared holiday for polls and requested IT firms to comply. A complaint has been filed with the police seeking action against the companies for flouting government poll norms, she said.

About 2,000 employees were sent out of the ELCOT premises by officials.

“We have told the companies that there should be no more shifts and have locked the campus gate,” she said.

This is perhaps the first time, the election authorities have taken action and filed a formal complaint against companies for working on polling day.

State Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar had yesterday warned of penal action against those violating the statutory provision giving workers paid leave on poll day.

Meanwhile, shops of leading textile retailer — Chennai Silks and jewellery firm Sri Kumaran Thanga Maligai — found operating in Tirunelveli district were sealed by officials, for violation of EC norms.

The shops were doing business today as usual despite the EC directive to declare holiday for its employees with pay.

As per orders of District Election Officials, Corporation Commissioner Lakshmi and other executives sealed the buildings, an official release said.
