After the death, the British Government has announced that the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher will receive a ceremonial funeral with military honours at St Paul’s Cathedral, Prime Minister David Cameron’s office announced Monday.
The Prime Minister himself also cut short a trip to Spain and France.
Downing Street said Thatcher would be accorded the same status of funeral as the Queen Mother and Princess Diana, but will not lie in state, in accordance with her own wishes.
The service will be followed by a private cremation, in accordance with the wishes of Thatcher’s family, the prime minister’s office said.
The date and timing of the service will be announced later.
“Today is a truly sad day for our country,” Cameron said in a statement that was broadcast by the BBC. “We’ve lost a great prime minister, a great leader, a great Briton.”
