Ramnavami or the birthday of Lord Rama (the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu) - the son of King Dasharath. It was a joyous occasion in Ayodhya all those centuries ago when King Dasharath's heir was finally born. It was like a dream come true for the king as the lack of an heir had troubled him sorely for many years.
The celebration of Ram Navami begins early in the morning with the prayer to the Sun. Since Sri Rama is believed to be born in the afternoon, a special prayer is also held at that time. The main celebration of Ram Navami takes place in Ayodhya, Bhadrachalam, and Rameswaram where thousands of devotees flock to do prayer or dip in the sacred river. In some places of India, processions of chariots decorated colorfully and boarded by people dressed up as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman are organized.
