Well-known playback singer TM Soundararajan, usually called as TMS, died at the age of 91 in Chennai on Saturday due to prolonged illness.

Few weeks back, TMS was admitted in a private hospital in Mylapore following respiratory difficulties. Unable to cope up with the medical treatments, TMS passed away on 25th May 2013 at 3.50 PM at his residence in Mandaveli. Soundararajan is survived by his wife and two sons.

Soundararajan became famous for his high pitch voice. He lent his voice to southern actors like N. T. Rama Rao, ANR, Gemini Ganesan, Jagayya, Kantha Rao, M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, S. S. Rajendran, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan, RaviChandar, Nagesh, Ranjan, Kantha Rao, T S Balayya, Jagayya, Rajanikanth etc.

TMS was also known for his devotional songs, especially on Lord Muruga, with his most famous ‘Ullam uruguthayya’ (The heart melts), which instantly evokes devotion even today.

The full name of TMS is Thuguluva Meenatchi Iyengar Sounderarajan (Tamil: டி. எம். சௌந்தரராஜன்). Born on March 24, 1922 – May 25, in a Sourashtra community in prominent prohitham family in Madurai, he was the second son of Meenatchi Iyengar.

TMS had been training his voice since the age of 7. After learning carnatic music from Chinnakonda Sarangapani Bhagavathar and Arayakkudi Rajamani Iyengar, he started giving stage concerts at the age of 23.

TMS was excellent for imitating the voices for most of the heroes he sang for. From 1955 onward Sivaji insist for TMS singing for him. Since then, TMS was mainly doing the playback for MGR and Sivaji till the end of 1977 and 1995 respectively.

The veteran singer served as a playback singer in the Tamil film industry for over six decades, from 1946 till 2007. He had also starred in some films. In 2010, he also rendered his voice for the Tamil Semmozhi Meet Anthem which was composed by A. R. Rahman.

In his career span of six decades, the Veteran playback singer recorded for over 10,000 Tamil film songs and 2500 devotional and other language film songs. Soundararajan was awarded Padmari in 2003, apart from winning several state awards.
